South Africa just hit a dark load shedding milestone 

South Africa has experienced a significant increase in the number of hours without power due to load shedding.  

By the end of the 29th week of 2023, the country reached a milestone of being in complete darkness for 1,176 hours, equivalent to 49 days, which is the same amount of total blackout hours over the past five years combined.  

If the trend continues, South Africans are projected to spend more time in the dark this year than in the past ten years combined. Despite some alleviation in load shedding in June, the country is still expected to face a total of 88 days in complete darkness this year.  

The Power Availability Ratio (PAR), which indicates the time consumers have access to utility power after deducting load shedding outage times, is showing slight improvements, but load shedding continues to be a significant issue in South Africa.
