Eskom’s big load-shedding problem 

Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned power utility, is facing a significant challenge with load-shedding as its energy availability factor (EAF) continues to decline. The EAF measures the percentage of time a power station is available for use when needed and is crucial for a power utility’s performance.  

Eskom’s EAF for week 28, 2023, was 56.28%, indicating a decline in generation capacity. The EAF has been on a downward trend for the past five years, making it unlikely for Eskom to achieve its targets of 65% EAF by March 2024 and 70% by March 2025.  

Load-shedding is expected to continue for years unless Eskom improves the reliability of its generation fleet.
