South Africa could get 13,000MW more power from existing stations — Ramokgopa 

South Africa’s Electricity Minister, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, announced that the country will prioritize the expansion of its grid over the next decade to address power shortages and end daily power cuts.  

The government is working on about 25 projects in existing substations that could potentially unlock around 13 gigawatts (GW) of energy. Over the next ten years, they aim to add an additional 24GW of power capacity.  

Despite these plans, the country’s power problems persist, with Eskom Holdings SOC, the state-owned utility, announcing stage 4 load-shedding due to power breakdowns, with 16,943MW of generating capacity affected. Ramokgopa emphasized that the grid remains vulnerable and faces challenges in maintaining adequate power availability.
