SIU after Eskom corruption masterminds 

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is expanding its investigations into corruption at Eskom, including contractors and private companies involved. The investigations have grown as more corruption is uncovered, ranging from employee-related cases to coal contracts, sabotage, and power station construction, including projects like Medupi and Kusile.  

The SIU is targeting processes and syndicates rather than focusing solely on individuals. Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa supports the efforts to protect assets and defend against corruption, and a National Electricity Crisis Committee (Necom) is focused on tackling crime, corruption, and safety issues at Eskom.  

Over 1,300 cases of sabotage have been reported, leading to over 100 arrests. The minister aims to identify and hold accountable the main orchestrators and masterminds behind the efforts to undermine electricity supply, as the destruction of infrastructure is believed to be orchestrated.
