Eskom grid rules unlawful, unreasonable, irrational – CEO 

G7 Renewable Energies, a South African power-project developer, is seeking to block Eskom’s new rules governing the connection of plants to the national electricity grid. The developer argues that the rules, known as Interim Grid Capacity Allocation Rules (IGCA), are flawed and will hinder the addition of more generation capacity.  

Eskom, the state-owned utility, has been struggling to meet electricity demand, leading to frequent power cuts. The IGCA rules are intended to allocate grid capacity and avoid “hogging” of grid resources, but G7 Renewable Energies believes they are unlawful, unreasonable, and irrational, imposing onerous and prejudicial procedures on applicants for grid access.  

The company suggests that private generation projects, like its two wind farms providing electricity to private customers, could help reduce the burden on Eskom.
