Good news for Joburg power outages 

City Power, the municipal power utility in Johannesburg, has reported improvements in its operations and reduced out-of-service substations due to lower load-shedding intensity in recent months.  

The number of plants out of service has decreased from about 600 to 498, attributed to the reduced impact of equipment failures and fewer incidents of cable theft and vandalism. City Power credited the improvements to a new operational model, which involves internal resource investment and prioritizing maintenance work.  

The power utility has also received a budget allocation of R23.7 billion for the 2023/24 financial year, with R4 billion dedicated to diversifying energy sources and reducing its dependency on Eskom.
