Push for nuclear over renewables in South Africa: report 

Critics of the Presidential Climate Commission’s draft report in South Africa argue that the push for renewable energy will put jobs at risk and may not fully meet the country’s energy needs.  

The commission advises maximizing renewable energy sources, particularly those backed by storage and peaking support. Critics express concern about the negative impacts on mining jobs, inaccuracies in representing the environmental impact of renewables, and the omission of nuclear power as a clean and cost-effective option.  

Despite the critics’ opinions, keeping renewables in the energy mix has shown benefits in mitigating load shedding during the country’s energy crisis. Additionally, renewable energy projects have attracted substantial investments, and the government is processing applications for close to 10,000 megawatts of renewable energy, including wind and solar with battery storage.
