Criminals are holding South Africa to ransom 

Criminal networks, including kidnapping syndicates and “construction mafias,” are operating with impunity in South Africa while the government struggles to effectively address the issue.  

The kidnapping syndicates, run by international criminals, have escalated their activities, targeting individuals perceived to have the means to pay ransoms. They also extort protection money from businesses to prevent potential kidnappings.  

On the other hand, construction mafias demand a significant share of contracts for major projects, leading to project shutdowns and violence if their demands are not met. Some officials have attempted negotiations with the mafias, but it has led to further demands, with one incident involving a demand of R5 million to prevent an alleged plot to bomb metro buildings and infrastructure.  

While there have been some efforts by the police to crack down on these criminal networks, the authorities have faced challenges, including reports of police involvement in criminal activities. The situation remains a serious concern for businesses and the public, with various political parties calling for a strong stance against the mafias.
