Eskom’s big grid problem 

Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned power utility, is facing a major problem with its transmission grid capacity to accommodate new wind and solar plants. The lack of funds and inadequate expansion has led to grid saturation in key regions, such as the Northern, Western, and Eastern Cape.  

Independent renewable power producers are struggling to find locations with sufficient grid access, resulting in delays in expanding renewable energy capacity. The situation has raised concerns about prolonged load-shedding and the need for significant upgrades to the transmission grid.  

Experts predict that South Africans may only see a meaningful impact from independent renewable power producers by 2026. The government and private sector are urged to drive forward deep changes, including political and leadership changes, to address the grid’s limitations and ensure the success of renewable energy projects.
