Jan Oberholzer reveals why he really left Eskom 

Jan Oberholzer, former Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Eskom, revealed that he decided to leave the power utility due to the shift from being an influential industry leader to working as a consultant who only provides opinions and advice.  

Oberholzer had served as COO since July 2018 and was on a fixed-term contract to support the long-term operation of Koeberg Nuclear Power Station and Kusile Power Station projects. After discussions with Eskom’s acting CEO Calib Cassim, they mutually agreed on his departure.  

Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena explained that the COO position was made redundant, with the Group Executive for Generation taking over those responsibilities. Some stakeholders, including Solidarity CEO Dirk Hermann, expressed concerns about Oberholzer’s departure, stating that his experience and technical knowledge were vital for Eskom during challenging times.
