Eskom employee arrested on corruption charges 

On 20 July 2023, an Eskom employee was arrested on corruption charges related to tender irregularities at the Kriel power station.  

The state-owned power utility received a tip-off from a member of the public in October 2022 about the alleged corruption. Following a thorough investigation by Eskom’s forensic department, it was revealed that the tender for a 12-month contract to provide coal yard lighting at Kriel power station was manipulated.  

The buyer approached stakeholders involved in the evaluation process to request the supplier to submit an inflated bid, with the understanding that the difference would be shared among them. The supplier was appointed based on the inflated bid and paid those involved in the scheme.  

The employee’s arrest is part of Eskom’s efforts to combat corruption and maintain a zero-tolerance stance on crime and corruption within the organization. Further arrests related to the case are expected.
