Cape Town load shedding could be worse than the rest of South Africa, premier warns 

Western Cape premier Alan Winde has warned that the province could face even worse load shedding than the rest of South Africa due to delays at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.  

The Western Cape Energy Council received an update on the national government’s Energy Action Plan to address mass power outages in the country. The concern is that if both units at Koeberg are offline at the same time, the province will experience a higher level of load shedding compared to the rest of the country. The provincial government is deeply concerned about the delays in refurbishing Koeberg, as it could have catastrophic consequences for residents and the economy.  

South Africa is estimated to lose around R725 billion to the economy this year due to load shedding, with the Reserve Bank projecting a significant impact on GDP growth in 2023.
