Eskom’s Koeberg delays cost South Africa R120 billion 

The closure of Koeberg’s Unit 1 since January 2022 has cost the South African economy an estimated R120 billion on top of the cost of refurbishing the power plant, according to energy analyst Clyde Mallinson.  

The refurbishment of Koeberg began 18 months ago, but Unit 1 is still offline, and its steam generator is yet to be replaced. Unit 2 is expected to go offline in September. Mallinson has argued that Koeberg should not be refurbished and should instead continue operating until July 2024 and then be retired.  

He also criticized Eskom’s ability to execute such a project, calling the situation a mess. The delayed refurbishment and Unit 1 being offline have resulted in significant economic costs for the country.
