Cape Town’s big plan to end load shedding 

The City of Cape Town has drafted an Energy Strategy with the goal of ending load shedding in the city for good. The strategy aims to add 1,000 MW of independent power supply, with the first 650 MW expected to go online within the next five years, protecting the city from four stages of load shedding by 2026.  

The energy supply mix includes embedded independent power producer renewable energy, dispatchable energy, wheeling, private small-scale embedded generation, and city-owned small-scale embedded generation.  

The deadline for public comments on the draft Energy Strategy is 31 July. Cape Town has been taking various measures to reduce its dependency on Eskom and is actively working to create a future-fit energy mix for the city.
