Eskom total blackout prevention plan 

Eskom, South Africa’s power utility, has implemented six “defensive barriers” to prevent a national blackout despite its electricity generation challenges.  

Eskom’s General Manager System Operator, Isabel Fick, stated that the chances of a total blackout are very low, and previous blackouts in the country were caused by issues in the transmission network rather than a lack of generation capacity. The six barriers, which include a permanent reserve margin and emergency response plans, would need to fail simultaneously for a national blackout to occur.  

Experts and industry associations also expressed confidence in Eskom’s grid stability and continuous improvement efforts. The real-time monitoring of the grid allows for quick reactions to any failures, and Eskom is closely collaborating with institutions like the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to enhance system stability.
