ANC does not benefit from keeping Eskom state-owned: Gordhan 

South African Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan stated in a written reply that keeping Eskom state-owned benefits the citizens of South Africa, not the African National Congress (ANC).  

He clarified that there is no government policy on the privatization of Eskom. The power utility is being reformed, with Eskom being separated into three subsidiaries – Transmission, Distribution, and Generation. The roadmap aims to increase transparency, cost efficiency, and foster competition in the electricity sector.  

However, Eskom continues to face challenges, including inefficiencies and load shedding issues. Gordhan also highlighted that Eskom received over R180 billion in bailouts over the last five years, failing to provide dividends during the same period.  

The utility’s financial strain has led to debates on its public ownership and the role of the ANC. Despite facing challenges, Eskom remains crucial in supporting renewable energy initiatives and playing a vital role in the country’s development.
