Eskom corruption crackdown — over 2,000 cases and 126 arrests 

The South African government has announced progress in the crackdown on corruption at Eskom, the country’s power utility. Since April 2022, over 2,000 cases related to criminality at Eskom have been reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS), with 1,586 cases currently under investigation.  

A total of 126 arrests have been made in connection with these cases. Law enforcement agencies are actively patrolling power stations and investigating criminal activities linked to Eskom, with a dedicated unit embedded at the power utility. They have conducted compliance inspections at scrap metal dealers to combat copper cable theft, which has been a major issue for Eskom.  

The crackdown has resulted in the recovery of R93 million for Eskom and is expected to have a tangible impact on the utility and citizens. The Minister of Electricity emphasized the importance of addressing fraud, corruption, and security issues at Eskom alongside technical solutions.
