Jan Oberholzer leaves Eskom “by mutual agreement” 

Jan Oberholzer, the former chief operating officer of Eskom, is leaving the state-owned power utility by mutual agreement, according to an announcement by Eskom. Oberholzer had been on a fixed-term contract to provide support for specific projects at Eskom.  

The utility expressed gratitude for his dedicated service and valuable contributions during his tenure, wishing him well in his future endeavours. Oberholzer officially retired in April after over 30 years at Eskom. The COO position will not be filled following Oberholzer’s departure, as the Eskom board decided to eliminate the role as part of the utility’s restructuring process.  

There were reports that Oberholzer may have faced suspension for not raising concerns about Eskom’s controversial R250-million private security contract while he was COO. The contract awarded to Fidelity Services Group has raised questions about its value and awarding process. Eskom awarded the emergency contract following a wage dispute with unions, which led to destructive riots at power stations and employees’ homes.
