Warning over sharp rise in riots, protests and social unrest in South Africa

The Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA) has released its 9th Edition of the Annual Risk Report, highlighting the escalating crises in South Africa. The report emphasizes the growing social unrest in the country, driven by social and economic pressures that have persisted for nearly a decade.

Economic challenges such as stagnant growth, high unemployment, and inequality continue to be major risks. Corruption, governance issues, and breakdowns in public service delivery are recurring themes. Environmental risks related to climate change, extreme weather events, and water scarcity have also become significant concerns.

The report calls for urgent collective action to address these risks, particularly the impact of climate change, the energy crisis, and deteriorating infrastructure.

Ethical and visionary leadership is deemed necessary to prevent South Africa from becoming a failed or mafia state.

The report outlines several strategies, including promoting economic growth, addressing inequality, investing in education and skills development, strengthening governance, combating corruption, and investing in public infrastructure.
