Eskom’s legal head against instituting legal proceedings against de Ruyter 

Eskom’s legal head, Mel Govender, advised against instituting legal proceedings against former CEO André de Ruyter for revelations made in his book.  

Instead, Govender suggested that Eskom focus its resources on recovering stolen funds and pursuing those responsible for corruption within the company.  

Speaking before Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa), Govender expressed her belief that de Ruyter’s disclosures in a television interview did not bring the company into disrepute, and she disagreed with his immediate departure. She emphasized the need for Eskom to prioritize preventing the leakage of company information rather than pursuing legal action against de Ruyter.  

Govender also announced her own departure from Eskom, stating that it was unrelated to de Ruyter’s exit and citing the challenging and frustrating nature of working in the organization.
