Taxi strike hits Eskom 

A taxi strike in the Western Cape, South Africa, is impacting power utility Eskom’s service levels. The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) initiated a seven-day strike against the City of Cape Town, leading to violence and disruptions in the city.  

Eskom warned that the strike would cause disruptions to its services, and its technicians and engineers would take longer to address faults and issues due to the danger posed to them during the unrest. Eskom’s services have been suspended in the affected areas. 

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde called for calm and urged taxi leaders to return to the table to resolve issues through dialogue with the provincial government and the city. The City of Cape Town has been working to ensure taxi operators comply with safety and security standards and operate within the law, but the latest strike has been seen as irrational and targeting operators by the taxi associations.  

The provincial government is investigating legal action against the minibus taxi associations to interdict the violence associated with the strike.
