Stage 8 load-shedding possible in coming weeks 

The risk of higher load-shedding stages, including stage 8, is still present in South Africa despite Eskom’s better performance during winter so far. Professor Hartmut Winkler warns that the country is not yet out of the woods and load-shedding could still escalate to higher stages.  

While Eskom has improved control over breakdowns at power stations, its coal generation fleet remains unreliable and output volatile. Demand for electricity has decreased due to the adoption of alternative energy sources like rooftop solar PV, which has significantly reduced the burden on Eskom.  

However, the possibility of elevated load-shedding stages remains due to the unreliability of the coal generation fleet.
