Good news for home solar in Joburg and Durban — nothing for Pretoria 

Several major South African metros are introducing solar feed-in tariffs, allowing residents with solar power systems to sell excess power back to the grid and reduce their monthly electricity bills.  

The City of Johannesburg and eThekwini Municipality have announced the implementation of feed-in tariffs, while the City of Cape Town has been offering this option since June 2023. However, there is no news yet on feed-in tariffs in the City of Tshwane.  

In Cape Town, there have been adjustments to the approval process for solar installations to speed up authorizations, and plans to reduce the monthly AMI meter administration fee for the 2023/24 financial year have been announced.
