Stage 8 load-shedding and total blackout warnings for South African businesses
Despite the low probability of such events, South African businesses are being encouraged to prepare for possible stage 8 load-shedding and even a total blackout.
The Financial Sector Contingency Forum, including the central bank and other financial regulators, is planning for a grid collapse, and businesses are being advised to do the same due to the potentially devastating consequences. The Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA) has warned of the severe disruption that stage 8 power cuts would cause to businesses, infrastructure, and security.
Companies are urged to revise their business impact assessments and risk response strategies while reducing dependence on the national grid and ensuring open communication with stakeholders. Additionally, they should consider the readiness of their suppliers for outages.
