Eskom paid R934,950 for kneepads and R238,000 for a mop — De Ruyter

In his new book, “Truth to Power: My Three Years Inside Eskom,” former Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter revealed widespread fraud and corruption at the South African state utility.

De Ruyter highlighted how the immense procurement bill at Eskom, which exceeded R140 billion annually, provided ample opportunities for corruption. He particularly noted the Gupta family’s audacious attempt to capture the Optimum colliery, supported by a board vote approving financial assistance over R2 billion.

De Ruyter detailed numerous instances of overpriced items, from toilet paper to knee pads, and placed blame on then-chief procurement officer Solly Tshitangano for poor oversight.

Upon tackling corruption, De Ruyter encountered surprising pushback, including the sudden release of an arrested contractor by a senior police officer.

Despite these challenges, efforts were made to recover funds from overcharging suppliers and lay criminal charges against offenders.
