South Africans are in survival mode  

The Consumer Financial Vulnerability Index (CFVI) for the second quarter of 2023 in South Africa has highlighted that consumers are increasingly absorbed by their finances to the detriment of personal relationships.  

The CFVI report noted that this “survival mode” thinking had already been present in the first quarter but had worsened in the second. High interest rates, inflation, load shedding, and rising petrol prices have been placing consumers under significant pressure.  

The report also emphasized a deterioration in the mental state and behaviour of South African consumers due to their prolonged state of financial vulnerability. This has led to a negative impact on interpersonal relationships with family, friends, and colleagues.
