Ramokgopa accused of misinformation
Energy expert Clyde Mallinson has refuted South African Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa’s claim that the country lost 1,000 MW from the grid due to the decommissioning of the Komati Power Station.
Mallinson stated that the minister’s claim is misleading as power stations have a specific lifespan and Komati had been in line to be decommissioned for a long time. By the time it was decommissioned, Komati was only producing around 120 MW, not the claimed 1,000 MW.
Mallinson also pointed out that the station’s output near the end of its life cost the country far more than it was worth.
