Former Eskom COO warns about crime and corruption at Eskom 

Former Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer has highlighted crime and corruption as significant challenges at the power utility. He believes that addressing these issues is essential for Eskom to function optimally.  

While Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa initially downplayed the connection between unit failures and corruption, he later acknowledged that corruption and fraud at Eskom are significant problems.  

Oberholzer emphasized five critical matters that Eskom should address to create a healthy company, including qualified and happy employees, adequate funding for maintenance and upgrades, proper maintenance to avoid breakdowns, procurement of additional capacity to handle maintenance, and addressing the issues of crime, corruption, and sabotage.  

Oberholzer also expressed his willingness to assist Eskom with procuring additional capacity using his skills and experience.
