Big problems at Koeberg — and the clock is ticking

Eskom’s Koeberg power station refurbishment is facing significant delays, and there are concerns that both units may be offline simultaneously.   

The refurbishment aims to extend the nuclear power station’s lifespan by up to 20 years, but Unit 1, initially expected to return to service by July, is now expected to come online in mid-October. With Unit 2 set to be taken offline in October, it could result in both units being out of service, taking almost 2,000MW off the grid, equivalent to two stages of load-shedding.

Further delays could jeopardize Koeberg’s operating license, which expires in July 2024, leading to potential closure if the refurbishment is not completed and relicensed on time.
