The ‘real’ cause of South Africa’s water crisis – according to Rand Water 

According to Rand Water CEO Sipho Mosai, municipal mismanagement and inadequate capacity are the root causes of the ongoing water shortage crisis in South Africa and Gauteng. Mosai clarified that Rand Water, as a bulk water supplier, does not have a supply issue and provides enough water to municipalities.  

However, he pointed out that many municipalities rely on Rand Water’s bulk reservoirs due to challenges with their own infrastructure and storage capacity. This results in delays in distributing water to households.  

Mosai emphasized that the main problem lies in the deteriorating water infrastructure of municipalities, with an average of 46% of supplied water being lost due to leaks and other issues. He urged municipalities to address their infrastructure maintenance and reduce non-revenue water, highlighting the importance of addressing these issues rather than solely relying on increased water supply.
