South Africa secures R4.3 billion to combat water crisis 

The Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) has secured $235 million (R4.3 billion) in finance from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to address South Africa’s water shortage. The funds will be used to create a water reuse infrastructure fund, with the aim of increasing water reuse in the country.  

The DBSA and GCF will establish a blended finance instrument, combining public and private funds, for the Water Reuse Program (WRP). As the program develops, project bonds will be used to raise additional finance.  

South Africa is grappling with power outages and declining water quality, while also seeking to build resilience to climate change. The country is already one of the most water-scarce nations in sub-Saharan Africa. The funding from the GCF includes a $200 million loan and a $35 million grant.
