South Africa playing a ‘dangerous game’ – former World Bank head 

Former World Bank president David Malpass has stated that South Africa is playing a “dangerous game” by attempting to pit countries against each other.  

He noted that South Africa’s relationship with Russia and China is a concern, and that these countries are exploiting the security concerns in Africa while the US has disengaged from the continent. Malpass suggested that the US needs to show strength in rebuilding relationships with African nations and advocated for greater transparency in trade relationships with China and Russia.  

South Africa’s relationship with Russia has been in the spotlight due to accusations of support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine, which could have economic implications such as the threat to its membership in the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
