Solar panel theft on the rise in South Africa 

Solar panel theft is on the rise in South Africa as the rapid adoption of solar power systems has led to a growing trend of theft of components. This has created a thriving black market for entire solar panels and their scrap parts.  

To protect their solar equipment, residents with solar power systems are advised to insure their panels and take measures such as adequate perimeter security, proper fencing, electric fences, and motion-sensing lights.  

A certified technician should install the solar power system, and homeowners should keep their properties well-lit, avoid leaving tools and equipment that could be used by thieves, and consider installing CCTV cameras for deterrence and assistance in investigations.
