Ramaphosa warned about South Africa’s rising unemployment

Business leaders in South Africa have warned President Cyril Ramaphosa that the country’s unemployment rate could rise to 38.1% by 2030 if urgent action is not taken to address the energy, logistics, and crime crises. The current unemployment rate is already at 32.9%, one of the highest among more than 80 nations tracked by Bloomberg.

To combat these challenges, business groups are collaborating with the government on various measures, including optimizing the diesel supply chain at power stations, supporting the return of additional units at power plants, working on efficient grid access and expansion, and setting up teams to address constraints in commodity-export supply chains.

Additionally, a joint initiative against crime and corruption, and measures to support crime detection and response are being implemented to revive the economy and restore investor confidence. If successful, these efforts could lead to economic growth averaging 5% and a decline in unemployment to 28% by 2030.
