Fears of NHI emigration ‘overplayed’  

Robert Yates, Executive Director of the Centre for Universal Health at Chatham House, believes that fears of medical professionals and taxpayers leaving South Africa due to the National Health Insurance (NHI) system are overplayed.  

Critics of the NHI Bill have expressed concerns about its implementation and the potential exodus of doctors and taxpayers. However, Yates argues that most countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) already have predominantly publicly-financed universal health coverage systems in place, so there are limited options for these individuals to go elsewhere.  

Yates also points out that other countries that have implemented universal health systems did not experience a significant exodus of health workers. He believes that the NHI would bring significant benefits to South Africa, including improved health outcomes, economic growth, and societal equality.
