Eskom’s big grid-hogging problem 

Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned electricity provider, is facing significant grid capacity constraints, with many companies “hogging” grid allocations awarded to them through contracts with the Independent Power Producer (IPP) office.  

Many companies received grid capacity but failed to supply electricity to the grid, leaving allocated capacity unused. Eskom has implemented new rules to decide access to the grid, shifting from a first-come, first-served basis to a first-ready, first-served basis to ensure companies with grid capacity allocations actually supply electricity.  

This aims to address grid hogging and delays in adding new capacity. The long-term solution is to invest in expanding and upgrading the country’s electricity grid.
