Eskom suspends head of security

Eskom, the South African power utility, has placed its acting head of security, Karen Pillay, on precautionary suspension.  

The suspension is reportedly related to a R500 million security contract awarded to Fidelity Services for investigating coal theft in 2022.  

However, Eskom has stated that it was misquoted regarding the reasons for the suspension and has clarified that it is to allow an unhindered investigation into allegations against Pillay. The utility has denied any wrongdoing regarding the security contract.  

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) and former Eskom CEO Matshela Koko have commented on the suspension, expressing hope for a thorough investigation and potential criminal charges.
