Eskom pockets R463 million after selling off land, buildings, and equipment
Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned power utility, has sold assets worth R463 million over the past five years, which is 72% higher than their book value. The assets sold include 494 buildings and facilities, 1,903 units of laboratory, transport, and workshop equipment, and 380 pieces of land.
However, these proceeds are unlikely to have a significant impact on Eskom’s financial situation, as the power utility has debt obligations amounting to R423 billion. In February 2023, the finance minister announced a debt relief arrangement of R254 billion for Eskom to manage its debt and end load-shedding, subject to specific conditions.
One of the main contributors to Eskom’s debt is the failure of municipalities to pay for electricity supply, which is being addressed with incentivized relief solutions.
