Andre De Ruyter’s Eskom investigation did the police and government’s job 

Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA) CEO Busi Mavuso defended the decision to fund former Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter’s private investigation into corruption at Eskom. The investigation, which cost R50 million, aimed to complement law enforcement investigations at the utility.  

A report by forensic investigation organization George Fivaz Forensic and Risk implicated top government officials in criminal activity at Eskom. However, the report has faced criticism, with claims that it lacked factual evidence. BLSA contributed R18 million to the investigation and Mavuso, who was an Eskom board member at the time, faced criticism for her involvement.  

Mavuso defended the investigation, stating that it aimed to gather data for the criminal justice system to take appropriate action. She highlighted the private sector’s commitment to enabling a capable government and emphasized the need to address corruption and misconduct at Eskom.  

Mavuso argued that the private sector’s contribution was necessary as the government and police had failed to take action, highlighting the importance of enabling a capable state.
